Somalia
In 1992 the United States began its intervention in Somalia to support UN relief efforts. This intervention started with the deployment of the 86th Evacuation Hospital, they were soon joined by assets from the 101st Corps Support Group, who deployed in December 1992. Not long after this the efforts in Somalia were expanded to included aviation. In April 1993 elements of the 5/101st Aviation Battalion were sent to the area. Once it was found that the efforts in Somalia were going to be more then a short term assignment a rotation policy was put into effect. 5/101st being replaced by the 9/101st and assets from the 101st Support Group going through a rotation and the 86th Evac Hospital returning home in Sept. 1993.
In Sept 1993, on two different occasions, Blackhawks from the 9/101st where fired upon. On the first occasion the door gunner was wounded by small arms fire. But on Sept. 25th a second Blackhawk was fire upon and hit by a rocket propelled grenade. Upon crashing the two pilots escaped, but two other members of the crew did not and died, giving their lives in the support of a humanitarian effort. The 9/101st returned home to Ft. Campbell in Feb. 1994.
Along with the aviation and logistical assets sent to Somalia, the 79th Quartermaster Detachment was sent to provide mortuary affairs support. They arrived in Somalia on Aug. 23rd 1993 and returned home on March 18th 1994.
Panama
During 1994 a flood of Cuban migrants were making their way to the US by any means possible. Many of them were intercepted by the US Coast Guard and taken to US installations in Panama. Within the holding camps disorder and riots broke out causing some US service members to be injured. Because of the 101st ability to react quickly the were called upon to restore order. In Jan. 1995 two battalions ( First and Third ) from the 502nd infantry were sent to Panama for operation "Safe Passage". By the end of the operation 3,500 migrants had be safely escorted for processing.
Honduras
In Honduras the 101st provided humanitarian assistance. They sent JTF-BRAVO, a helicopter battalion, to take supplies to the villages that are inaccessible by roads. By using Chinooks or large cargo helicopters the supplies can easily be delivered to National Guard Units who can then use them to build schools, houses, ect.... The division has units there often.
Haiti
Humanitarian assistance was provided, by the 101st, to the People of Haiti in 1998. The 2nd Battalion, 327th Infantry deployed on April 23 to take over for the 3rd Battalion, 8th Marines. They spent six months there acting as a peacekeeping force, helping the people of Haiti.
Kosovo
Peacekeeping in Kosovo is now a role of the 101st. Infantry Battalions from the 101st have been rotating to Kosovo in support of UN peacekeeping efforts. From Jan. 2000 to July 2000 the 2/187th Infantry was deployed, being replaced by the 2/327th. The deployment of the 2/327th will end sometime near the end of 2000. While in the area the troops are actually under the command of the UN appointed commander.
